From September 30 to October 3, the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) hosted a workshop series entitled “Strengthening Community-Based Blue Tourism in Tobago.” The event brought together fisherfolk, tour operators, community leaders, and tourism stakeholders to explore how marine and coastal conservation, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable livelihoods can work in synergy to advance the blue tourism sector on the island.
Over the course of four days, participants engaged in a series of interactive sessions and site visits designed to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration. These activities provided opportunities to share local experiences, identify challenges and opportunities, and co-develop strategies for greener, more inclusive, and community-driven approaches to tourism.
The workshop highlighted the importance of integrating environmental stewardship with sustainable economic development and reinforced the role of local communities as key actors in building a resilient blue economy.
CANARI extends sincere thanks to all participants, co-facilitators, and partners, including the Rural Development Unit of the Division of Settlements, Public Utilities and Rural Development, Castara Retreats, and the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited (TTAL), for their collaboration and commitment to this initiative.
This workshop forms part of ongoing efforts under the Caribbean Blue Tourism Initiative, which seeks to strengthen community-based and nature-inclusive tourism across the region.
