Strengthening local capacities for sustainable tourism in Ras Rmal (Djerba, Tunisia)

December 2025 | Djerba, Tunisia

As part of the Blue Tourism Initiative, the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, in collaboration with the Association Jlij de l’Environnement Marin (AJEM), supported the organisation of a two-day capacity-building workshop in Ras Rmal, located on the island of Djerba, Tunisia. The workshop was hosted at the Iberostar Mehari Waves Djerba Hotel.  The workshop aimed to strengthen local capacities to improve tourism services while reinforcing environmentally responsible practices. At the same time, it sought to raise awareness of the exceptional ecological value and tourism potential of Ras Rmal — a natural site of high biodiversity importance.

Training 1: Supporting responsible marine tourism

The first day focused on boat operators and sea-excursion providers. Through interactive sessions, participants explored ways to enhance service quality while adopting more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. Discussions highlighted the critical role tourism professionals play in safeguarding Ras Rmal and contributing to its long-term conservation.

Training 2: Building partnerships for inclusive local development

The second day brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including local administrations, civil society organisations, tourism professionals, media representatives, and women artisans. Exchanges focused on collaboration and innovation as key drivers for promoting biodiversity-friendly local products and creating inclusive economic opportunities linked to sustainable tourism.

From Training to outcomes

The workshop concluded with:

  • Stronger alignment and cooperation among local stakeholders

  • Practical recommendations to improve the quality and sustainability of boat tourism services

  • New ideas to better connect biodiversity conservation with local livelihoods and economic opportunities

By fostering dialogue, skills development, and shared ownership, this initiative contributes to positioning Ras Rmal as a model for sustainable, inclusive, and biodiversity-friendly tourism in the Mediterranean.

By investing in local skills, partnerships, and shared responsibility, Djerba is taking meaningful steps toward blue tourism that benefits nature, communities, and the local economy.
