Laborie, Saint Lucia: driving sustainable coastal and marine tourism

The Blue Tourism Initiative, in collaboration with its partner, the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), is proud to announce the launch of community-based coastal and marine tourism activities on the Laborie, Saint Lucia.

Project Title:  Laborie, Saint Lucia: driving sustainable coastal and marine tourism
Duration: June 2025 – January 2026

As part of the Caribbean Blue Tourism Initiative, the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) with its local partner the Laborie Development Foundation will implement activities to strengthen Laborie’s position as a leader in sustainable tourism, while addressing critical challenges and leveraging unique opportunities and setting a benchmark for resilience and innovation. 

Project Objectives

  • Enhance Community-Based Tourism: Support for creating policies to guide and grow community-based tourism, ensure long-term sustainability for the local community and environment.
  • Cultivating Sustainable Tourism through Micro and Small-Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) cluster: Develop a vision for ecotourism that fosters local livelihoods and socio-economic opportunities, facilitating the creation of MSMEs.

Key Activities

  1. Building local capacity: cultivate a MSME clusters to foster innovation and efficiency, to adopt sustainable practices, enhance business development, and embrace innovation.
  2. Marketing CBT experiences: highlighting Laborie’s cultural and natural assets.
  3. Map and connect community-based tourism (CBT) services for eco-conscious travellers.

  4. Provide financial support and resources for environmentally sustainable tourism projects.

  5. Enhance coordination and participatory planning through robust stakeholder engagement.

Expected Results

  1. Strengthened community capacity for adaptive tourism planning and management.
  2. Diversified tourism offerings that meet global demand for local, eco-friendly experiences.
  3. Laborie positioned as a benchmark for blue, inclusive, and resilient tourism in the region.
  4. Improved financial access for MSMEs to implement sustainable initiatives, thanks to funding mechanisms, facilitating grants for MSMEs engaged in CBT.

  5. Increased visibility and demand for community-based tourism (CBT) experiences, with a sustainable tourism model that preserves cultural and environmental assets.

     

Impact

Through this initiative, Laborie, in St. Lucia, will count with the strategic development of eco-conscious tourism offerings, fostering increased tourist engagement with authentic local experiences, improving livelihood opportunities for micro and small tourism enterprises, enhancing the community’s resilience to climate and economic shocks, and securing its position as a flagship destination for sustainable coastal and marine tourism in the Caribbean.
