Tools and Initiatives to promote a Sustainable Blue Economy in the Mediterranean. Side-Event at COP28

Last December 6th, 2023 in Portorož (Slovenia), at the 23rd Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols (COP23), we hosted the side event «Tools and Initiative to promote Sustainable Blue Economy in the Mediterranean.» 

The side event provided space for exchange and dialogue on the tools and initiatives to promote a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean region.
Our partners, IDDRI, and eco-union, presented the Blue Tourism Initiative and the current state and future evolution of blue tourism. IUCN, shared insights from the ongoing regional diagnosis for the tourism sector in the Mediterranean region. 

The key takeaways from the Policy Sessiona sustainable blue economy that enables economic growth and environmental protection; integration of MSP within the Barcelona Convention through an ecosystem approach and climate adaptation in the Mediterranean region; and identification of the key stakeholders in the negotiation processes. 

In the 2nd Session of the event, Sectorial and Tools files have been discussed: nature-based solutions and regenerative approach integration towards more sustainable blue tourism, mapping spatial data for indicators as statistical tools to measure sustainable blue economy towards an Integrated Maritime Policies (IMP) to provide regulation & policy frames for assessing Mediterranean socio-ecosystem status, and the revision of plastic pollution solutions.
