Key Takeaways from the Webinar “Policy Pathways Towards a More Sustainable Cruise Sector”

Barcelona, Spain – October 2024

The Webinar “Policy Pathways Towards a More Sustainable Cruise Sector” was organized by the partners of the Blue Tourism Initiative as a platform for debate on the cruise sector’s multidimensional and multilevel impacts, governance challenges and to reflect on the opportunities and policy pathways for a more sustainable future for the cruise sector.

Central to the event was the presentation of a new report entitled “Policy Pathways Towards a More Sustainable Cruise Sector,” conducted by eco-union and IDDRI. This study assesses the current trends, challenges, and opportunities in the cruise sector and proposes policy actions for advancing a more sustainable cruise tourism sector. Furthermore, a panel discussion allowed stakeholders to reflect on the report’s key findings, share best practices, and engage in a forward-looking debate on shaping a greener, more sustainable cruise industry.

The webinar attracted a broad audience, primarily cruise tourism stakeholders, NGO representatives, and private sector participants, who were invited to share their views and discuss the sector’s future governance, focusing on fostering best practices and improving environmental sustainability.
