Experience Nariva Initiative (Caribbean) - Tourism Stakeholders' Workshop

June 2024

Our Caribbean partner, Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI), recently conducted a participatory mapping workshop for the communities of Manzanilla, Kernaham, Mafeking, and Ortoire, in Trinidad and Tobago.

Held on June 3, 2024, at the Mayaro Resource Centre, the workshop was geared toward collecting data and community perspectives to plan biodiversity conservation and ecotourism activities for the Nariva Swamp area later this year.

The workshop was specifically designed to leverage local knowledge among targeted stakeholders including tour guides and other ecotourism service providers, farmers, fisherfolk, environmental groups, community-based organizations, and small and micro enterprises (SMEs) using a Participatory Geographic Information Systems methodology (PGIS).

This workshop was carried out in support of the Experience Nariva Initiative, which is funded through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and our Blue Tourism Initiative. During the 2nd component, our Initiative will enable the launch of a concrete ecotourism project in the marine protected area following the results of this initial study, to improve tourism strategies toward the conservation of natural resources and local economic development through community-based tourism.
